Academic Guidance for Today’s Secondary School Student

Dad thinks you should be a doctor. Mom says you should be a lawyer. You want to be a sports therapist or graphic designer. What to do?

No, this is not a cliched sketch comedy routine. It’s more real than ever. Not only do parents have expectations for their children, but the children are also often left bewildered after over a decade of primary-middle-secondary school education on to what really do with their post-secondary education and careers thereafter. What they should study, where they should study, and being divided over what to do with their futures—there is a lot of uncertainty in a young student’s mind.

In decades previous, students just bit the bullet, studied where they thought they ought to, and let the future take its course. That was then and it was a bit nerve-racking. But now there are better options. Academic guidance from professionals that understand the different facets of academia—i.e. humanities, math and science, the trades—plus interviewing and gaining information on the student’s aptitudes, and what sort of institution might be best to apply to are commonplace now. This more analytical approach to planning one’s future relieves a lot of stress off students that have honest goals but a lot of confusion.
